Louisiana’s rainy season leaves behind more than puddles. Moisture that gets trapped behind walls, under flooring, or inside HVAC systems can turn into mold growth within days — often long before it’s visible. As IICRC-certified remediation specialists, here are the five warning signs we tell homeowners never to ignore.
1. A musty smell that won't go away
If a room smells damp or earthy even after cleaning, that odor is often the first sign of mold growing somewhere you can’t see — inside a wall cavity, under carpet padding, or behind a baseboard.
2. Discoloration on walls or ceilings
Dark spots, yellowish rings, or fuzzy patches on drywall, especially near windows, ceilings, or exterior walls, usually mean moisture has been sitting there for a while. What looks like a small stain can mean much larger hidden growth behind the surface.
3. Peeling paint or bubbling drywall
When moisture gets trapped behind a painted surface, it breaks down the bond between paint and wall, causing bubbling, cracking, or peeling. This is a physical sign of water intrusion, not just cosmetic wear.

Quick checklist for homeowners
- Check under sinks, around window frames, and near exterior walls for soft or discolored drywall.
- Run a dehumidifier in rooms that stay humid after storms, and note if the smell returns.
- If you spot two or more warning signs together, schedule a professional inspection rather than waiting.
4. Increased allergy or respiratory symptoms at home
If household members notice more sneezing, coughing, or irritated eyes specifically while indoors, and symptoms ease elsewhere, airborne mold spores could be the cause, even without visible growth yet.
5. Warped or soft flooring
Flooring that feels spongy underfoot, or that has started to warp or separate at the seams, points to moisture that has worked its way underneath. By the time flooring shows damage, mold has often already had time to establish.
If any of these signs sound familiar, don’t wait for insurance approval to get an inspection scheduled. Early detection is the difference between a contained cleanup and a full remediation project.
