GAF Certified vs. Standard Roofing: Why the Certification Matters
What a System Plus Warranty covers and why it matters when your roof takes the next Gulf Coast storm.

Every roofing crew on the Gulf Coast will tell you their shingles are good. Far fewer can back that up with a manufacturer’s own certification. On a coastline that sees hurricane-force wind every season, the difference between a “certified” installer and a standard one is not marketing — it is what actually happens to your roof the next time a storm rolls through.
What GAF Certification actually means
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America, and its Certified Contractor program is not handed out for free. Crews have to meet minimum installation volume, pass factory training, and maintain a clean workmanship record. Fewer than 3% of roofing contractors nationwide hold this certification.
Field note — Only GAF Certified contractors can offer the System Plus Warranty, which covers both materials and labor if something goes wrong. Standard installers can only pass along the manufacturer’s materials-only warranty.
Standard roofing: what you're actually getting
A non-certified crew can still install a GAF shingle, but the warranty that comes with it is thin. If flashing is installed wrong, if underlayment is skipped, or if ventilation is undersized, the materials warranty will not cover it — because none of those are “materials,” they are workmanship. Homeowners often don’t find this out until they file a claim.

What to ask before you sign a roofing contract
- Is your crew currently GAF Certified, and can you show the certificate number?
- Is the ventilation and flashing system included in the certified install, or priced separately?
- Underestimating documentation requirements at every phase.
